Determine Which iPad You Have By Its Model Number

With the release of the latest iPad, Apple has done away with version numbers like the one it used on the iPad 2, and from now on will refer to all models as “iPad”. This can make it difficult when purchasing a used iPad to know exactly what you are getting, or even when buying a new one to be sure you’re getting what you’re paying for. Each iPad has a model number (it starts with an ‘A’) on the back, in the tiny text below the “iPad” label. Alternatively, you can also find the model number by going into Settings from your Home screen, tapping General, then About, and finally Regulatory and you’ll see the model number listed at the top. Using this model number you can find what version of the iPad you have in the list below.

New iPad
There are three versions of the “new iPad”, which some refer to as “iPad 3″:

  • Wi-Fi only: A1416
  • Wi-Fi and AT&T (GSM): A1430
  • Wi-Fi and Verizon (CDMA): A1403

iPad 2
There are also three versions of the iPad 2:

  • Wi-Fi only: A1395
  • Wi-Fi and AT&T (GSM): A1396
  • Wi-Fi and Verizon (CDMA): A1397

iPad
There are two versions of the original iPad:

  • Wi-Fi only: A1219
  • Wi-Fi and AT&T (GSM): A1337
